The Velvet Chair

The Velvet Chair is a literary publishing house for women with something unmistakably their own to say.

We are drawn to distinct voices, emotionally alive work, and books with a world of their own. We look for the strange detail, the difficult feeling, the unruly idea, and the sentence that sounds like nobody else.

Our editorial work protects what makes each voice singular and helps the book become more fully itself. Then we carry it toward the readers who have been waiting for it.

Keep Your Edges

We believe a voice should survive the edit.

The work can be intimate, unruly, funny, dark, tender, strange, sunlit, or difficult to classify. It should feel inhabited. It should know what it is here to say.

The Velvet Chair exists for books that resist being flattened into something more familiar, more convenient, or more easily explained.

Our First Author

Anne Laurette is the first author published by The Velvet Chair.

Her debut novel, Too Bright, was released in December 2025. Set in New England, the book follows Lo through friendship, desire, grief, and the unsettling freedom of taking up more room in her own life.

The author-narrated audiobook is now in production, with a paperback edition also in development. Anne’s next novel, Too Quiet, is expected in December 2026.

Too Bright is available directly through The Velvet Chair, on Amazon Kindle, and on Apple Books.

The House Is Growing

Another author is preparing to join The Velvet Chair.

Her work brings different weather into the house: brighter, unrulier, funny in unexpected places, and deeply interested in friendship, belonging, grief, and the private worlds girls build together.

Her first novel is currently in development, with publication planned for early summer 2027.

What Comes Next

The Velvet Chair is building a catalog of singular women’s voices and books that remain with the reader long after the final page.

We are currently focused on the authors and books already in development. New submissions are closed for now. Future opportunities, releases, early-reader invitations, and house news will be shared through our email list and social channels.

We’re glad you found us.
